Cardiac Assist Devices

Cardiac assist devices are used to monitor, regulate and assist heart function.  The most common medical device applications include pacemakers, pacemaker leads, pacemaker headers, cardioverter-defibrillators, and ventricular assist devices.

Some cardiac assist devices are intended for short term use, typically for patients recovering from heart attacks or heart surgery, while others are intended for long term use implantation (months to years; and in some cases for life).  Long term devices are often used as a bridge to transplantation to keep patients alive with a good quality of life while they wait for a new heart.

Biomerics’ TPU biopolymers provide designers will the biocompatibility and electrical requirements for these demanding long term implantable devices.  Quadrathane's™ unique combination of biostability, chemical resistance, toughness, and elasticity make it ideal for use in pacemaker leads and headers.  Biomerics antimicrobial, extrusion, and body softening technologies can be applied to these devices to prevent complications due to infection and biodegradation.
